Perfect Weather For a Trip to the Zoo

It?s February, so it should come as no surprise that most of the days this week will include cold weather. I don?t mind the cold. As a matter of fact, I really welcome the colder temperatures in the fall after a long hot summer. But about this time of year, I start thinking of warmer temperatures that mean I can spend more time outside of the house. Thankfully, today will feel a little like spring as warmer weather will be here for a short time.

This morning while listening to the weather forecast on the radio, I knew that my son and I were going to have to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather. What that means on some days is that we spend some time playing in the yard. But today, I think we will head out to the zoo to take advantage of the weather. The only bad part of about heading to the zoo on a day like today is that even though it may warm enough for us to be out, some of the animals still don?t think it is warm enough to be outside.

But that won?t stop us because I know that the animals that my toddler likes the best are always out when we visit. The lions are his favorite and he is great at making roaring noises at them. The sea lions and penguins also like the weather even when it may be too cold for other animals. I can?t wait to take advantage of the warmer than normal weather and head out to the zoo.

The Truth About Forestry

For some reason, the general population has gotten it into their heads that forestry in all its various shapes and forms is evil. The removal of trees serves no other purpose than to increase global warming and trigger climate change. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Most foresters firmly believe in something called sustainable forestry.  For far longer than most people realize, most foresters have been very careful about the number and types of logs they remove from the forests. Very few foresters like the idea of clear-cutting the trees, something that’s often required as a result of urban sprawl. If given a choice, most foresters believe in thinning the woods just enough so that the forest remains healthy and productive for another hundred years or so.

Before the sawmill sends a team into the woods to start cutting, a timber buyer walks through the area and carefully marks the trees that should be removed. In addition to marking trees that the sawmill will be able to use to earn money, the timber buyer also pays careful attention to how the removal of a tree will affect the surrounding, health trees, if removing the tree will create enough room and light for the remaining trees to grow.

In addition to taking health trees from the woods, foresters also look for trees that aren’t health and need to be removed before they infect the entire woods.  The tops of trees (the leafy branchy parts) don’t have much value to the sawmill, and are left lying in the woods after the trunk of the tree has been scaled and removed. These abandoned tops look like an eyesore but they create a habitat for rabbits, squirrels, and other forest creatures. Eventually the tops decompose and become fertilizer for the trees that grow from the spot where the top fell.

Climate Change and Concerns About Infectious Diseases

When most of us hear the word climate change, many of us automatically think about the ozone layer and how if it continues to thin, things could get very toasty down here on earth. Very few of us don’t see past that one detail, we fail to consider how if the climate continues to change it could lead to an increase in infectious diseases.

Everyone knows that the warmer an area is, the more prone people who live there seems to be to developing illness. Throughout history, people living the southern part of the United States not only seemed to be more inclined to developing some serious illness than those that lived in the north, frequently the further south the person lived, the more likely it was that the illness would be fatal.

The reason for this has to do with the way that bacteria grow. It thrives in warm environments. While the cold northern winters might not actually kill off the bacteria, but it at least forces the bacteria and diseases to lay dormant for a period of time, allowing doctors to come up with the time needed to make sure that they come up with the medications and vaccinations needed to treat the disease.

Most doctors and scientist have become very concerned that if global warming continues and earth gets a couple of degrees warmer every single year, that there’s a good chance that infectious diseases will run rampant and no one will have enough time to come up with cures. The other issue that worries many researchers is that in addition to spreading faster and losing the dormant period, the warmer climate will make it possible for the infectious diseases to mutate faster.
